I'm currently in the process of looking for a Christmas gift for my dad. I know, I know, I should have gotten round to it earlier, but I was very short on money. Now that I actually have the funds I don't really know what to go for.

Last year's gift was a bust. I got him a nice Merkur safety razor. Unfortunately, it turned out that dad's skin is completely incompatible with it (it pretty much cuts the skin away).

This year I've had a few ideas, but nothing really solid. So far I thought of:

- A nice, proper leather belt, probably from a hunting shop. Unfortunately, that may not come to pass. Hunting shops seem to have gone to the dogs and based on their websites only offer generic belts (same things I could pick up in a bloody shopping centre) or ammunition belts. Argh.

- A Bluetooth OBD II thingy. My dad got his first proper (Android) smartphone fairly recently and seems to like it. I thought of getting him one of those things you can connect to your car and a smartphone to stream data/perform basic diagnostics. Unfortunately, those things aren't that easy to find outside of dodgy online stores/auctions.

- A Zippo lighter. Price is the problem here. I'm a college student with minimal income who can't afford to give my dad a nice, classic and tasteful $100-150 Zippo, but the cheaper ones are just tacky.

-A good thermos. It's a pretty lame gift and my final resort. On the plus side, my could really use one at the moment.

My dad is a pretty oldschool person who like gadgets, but he also prefers them to have even minimal practical use, that's why I thought of the diagnostic tool.

So, fellow Opponauts, what are you gonna give to your dads (or other adult male relatives)? I'm kinda stumped here and could use a push in the right direction. Time is running out.

Fancy beers is what I tend to get my dad, and he has always been pleased with it.

This year it's holiday seasonals from Italy.

giving a parrot training DVD for my brother, as he always wanted to train his pet cockatiel to ride a skateboard.

My father is getting motorcycle parts, but that's not very helpful for you if your dad doesn't have one. My father in law is getting a fancy cigar cutter and woodworking tools.

Nope, he doesn't. But he'd really, really like one.

My dad recently had a bit of skin cancer removed from his arms. so I got him a bunch of light weight UV protectant shirts. I also paid our entry into the 2014 Hotrod Power Tour.

I'm a dad and have asked for books, DVDs, a welder and a chassis for a MEV Exocet (Miata meets Atom).

My dads a photographer by training, but never could work with the chemicals (46 years in a factory instead). He finally caved and went digital a couple years ago. Now that hes finally got back into it, Im giving him a monopod. I keep mine in the car, and hes always asking for it when I need it.

You can find the OBD II scanners on amazon, just be sure to ask around here for a make/model recommendation.
